Packing Your Purse – The Top 10 NYC Essentials

15 May

Among my friends, I am always the most prepared, purse-wise. So I put together a little list of the essentials that every girl should carry, at all times. And surely there’s a little room in your giant handbag for some necessities that will certainly come in handy at some point or another! And if there isn’t any room, then make some! Trust me, you need this.

1. Hand Sanitizer: In NYC, we constantly find ourselves in germ-ridden areas and situations; subway poles, handshakes, taxi-cab door handles and money, to name a few. In fact, did you know that touching money is even more filthy than touching a toilet (click here to read “6 Items You Touch Everyday That Are Filthier Than A Toilet”)? Gross! I mean think about it…who knows where that dollar bill has been? In an NYC sewer? With a drug addict’s coke stash? In a stripper’s g-string? The disgusting possibilities are endless. So do yourself a favour and sanitize, whenever you need to. I’m not saying you should become a germaphobe, but just be aware of when it’s necessary. Bath & Body Works make some great smelling, purse-friendly hand sanitizers called “PocketBacs” at very reasonable prices (usually five for $5). My favourite scents are Eucalyptus Spearmint, Orange Ginger, Fresh Lavender and Warm Vanilla Sugar.  Click here to view their entire collection.

2. Gum and/or Mints: This is kind of a self-explanatory one, but you never know when you need a bit of a fresh-breath fix on-the-go, whether you just ate a particularly garlicky meal in Little Italy, or just need a little pick-me-up before a dinner date. Always important to be minty fresh. I highly recommend steering clear of any sugar-free gum or mint varieties; I’m a firm believer that artificial sweeteners are legal poisons that the FDA allows to circulate through our foods. Even though they tout fewer calories, several studies have shown that they may also lead to a bevy of potentially fatal illnesses, including cancer (although the FDA and most other agencies, especially government-based ones, will try to convince you otherwise). Personally, I’d rather “indulge” in a two-calorie tic tac, than run that risk! Click here to visit the Tic Tac website, one of my favourite pocket mints!

3. Pen & Paper: Yes, it’s true that we all have smartphones these days, with note-taking capabilities. But how annoying is it when you’re on a call and someone is trying to give you some important info you need to take down, like a phone number or address? 917…”OK, hold on, 9…1…7…OK, what’s next?” Frustrating! That’s why it’s absolutely essential you carry a pen and some kind of small notebook in your purse, to avoid situations like this. As old school as it may seem, it really comes in handy. Personally, I’m a huge fan of stationery, so I am well-stocked with many mini-notebooks from one of my favourite stationary brands, Moleskine (and I also have a large number of free TD Bank pens, in every nook and cranny of my flat). Moleskine makes great leather-bound or paper-bound notebooks in various sizes, colours and paper types (grid, lines, blank). Click here to visit their website and browse the selection.

4. Fragrances: A lady always needs to smell amazing, even if she’s just had the most sweaty gym session in existence. But don’t worry, you don’t need to carry your full-size perfume bottle around in your bag. Many perfume varieties carry a smaller, more convenient size, fit for any purse. In fact, Sephora has a whole section dedicated to “travel size fragrances”. I saw a 50% off tag on a set of Sephora’s most popular fragrance rollerballs in-store yesterday, for those who are interested — I believe it was $32 for a set valuing over $100! What a steal! And if you’re like me and don’t really like switching up your perfumes, Sephora has another great service, where you can ask for a sample of any perfume they carry in-store. So you can make your own travel-size version, even if the company doesn’t manufacture it. Click here to view Sephora.com’s online “travel size fragrance selection, including Dolce & Gabbana’s “The One” purse spray and refills, pictured below.

5. Compact Mirror: I can’t tell you how many times I find myself rushing out my apartment door, left to do my make-up on the journey to my destination. In fact, this is my situation more often than not. So it’s ultra convenient to have a little compact mirror, stuffed into my purse for touch-ups (and it also comes in handy after any meal where spinach is involved — nothing more unattractive than food caught in your teeth)! I picked up a super cute compact mirror handmade in India when I was vacationing in Mumbai a couple of months ago. But for a more local selection, Sephora comes to the rescue! They always have cute, bedazzled compact mirrors nearby to the checkout line, or you can always click here to see the online selection, including Tarina Tarantino’s mirror, below.

6. Stain Remover: Accidental spill? We’ve all been there. But don’t moan and groan about your stain sorrows — help the situation with a Tide to Go stick. Now, bear in mind, it doesn’t have magical powers. Rarely have I seen a stain completely disappear. But it certainly makes a big difference (much better than that big splotch of tomato sauce on your white blouse, anyway)! The Tide website claims it’s “the #1 instant stain remover [based on sales] and helps remove some of your toughest fresh food and drink stains”. So keep it on you, just in case you have one of those “whoops” moments. Click here to view the product on the Tide website.

7. Tissues: Nothing worse than a sniffly nose without a tissue. It really sets me into panic-mode — how on earth will I stop this sniffing, tissue-less?! Don’t run into that situation and prepare yourself with some Kleenex Pocket Packs. There are of course, several other situations where a tissue is the only way out as well. For example, tearful moments…or when some unknown substance somehow made contact with your hand…or when you want to be like one of those weirdos on the subways/buses who use tissues as a buffer between their hands and the poles (I admit, that might be a smarter route than directly touching the communal, metal, germ-stick, but they still look weird to me).

8. Make-Up/Hair Necessities: This is a category where you can pick and choose what suits your personality/lifestyle. I am not one to wear too much make-up, so my in-purse make-up selection is seemingly sparse, compared to others. You can prioritize anything, between pressed powder, mascara, eyelash curler, eye-liner, lip gloss/stick, bobby pins, hair ties etc. Personally, I carry black eye-liner (in case I make impromptu day-to-night plans, it helps me look evening-ready) and a couple of lip balms and glosses/sticks. I particularly like Yves Saint Laurent’s Glossy Balms, as they are more balmy with a hint of colour and shine (click here to purchase from Sephora.com).

9. Smartphone “Juice Pack”: I recently invested in one of these and it’s truly a Godsend. If your smartphone has a “juice pack” available, then buy it! For those of you who don’t know, a “juice pack” is a phone battery charger that doesn’t require a wall outlet; it’s battery-powered, itself. So when you’re running around the City and your phone runs out of juice, you can re-juice it on-the-go, and use the phone while it’s juicing! Brilliant! I use the Morphie case for my iPhone 4S (click here to purchase), which is great.

10. Acetaminophen and/or Midol Tablets: Not too much to say about this one either, but just in case you get a crazy headache or ridiculous cramps, you should have some Tylenol or Midol on-hand. This way, you can at least try to stick around, wherever you are, instead of bail and head straight for the comfort of your bed.

And of course, never forget the very basics, like your credit cards/cash, keys, ID, phone, etc. You certainly don’t want to be stranded without any one of these things! So before you head out and start your day, take a look at this list, and make sure you are well-prepared for any situation NYC throws at you!

GLITTER, GLITTER, GLITTER EVERYWHERE: tarina tarantino

10 May

My lovely mother, is a sucker for anything and everything glittery…one might call her a “Glitter-holic”. Genetically, this trait has been passed down to me, and has surfaced in recent years. My glitter-sensor was immediately drawn to a brand I’d never seen in Sephora before: Tarina Tarantino. Tarina offers sparkles for everything: face, body, even hair…and they’re all equally awesome. Dust on a little for a slight, added shimmery effect to your regular make-up regimen, or go sparkle-happy for a fun night out! And even more appealing is the packaging, especially that of the shimmer dusts. They come in perfume-esque bottles with a Victorian-style atomizer, that “poufs just the right amount of luxurious shimmer onto the face, body, and hair”, according to Sephora’s website. It’s such a fresh and fun idea! So take a page out of Tarina’s book and let your inner girly-girl out via Sephora.com and their new shipping offer (click here for more info)! Tarina Tarantino’s Sparklicity products have received great reviews on Sephora and all over the internet. And just on a side note, how great is the word, “Sparklicity”? Happy sparkling!

THANK YOU, SEPHORA.COM!: sephora.com free 3-day shipping

7 May

Ahh…Sephora…the girly girl’s ultimate playground, where sparkles and rainbows and butterflies unite. From make-up to skin care, fragrance to nail art, beauty tools to travel accessories, they’ve got it all. Not a fan of the in-store navigational situation? Overwhelmed by your options? Grossed out by the 12 year-old trying on a lip gloss tester with the same wand over, and over, and over again? No problem. Sephora.com is just the place for you. It is one of the easiest websites to use, to find exactly what you’re looking for. In fact, it features several items that many store locations don’t keep in-house. And, it even has a “sale” section you can browse through with ease (although many store locations feature sale items, they are usually scattered throughout the store, with limited selection).

Now, I’m sure most (if not all) of you are well-aware of Sephora’s online shop. So what’s the new news, you ask? Well, here it is: free standard 3-day shipping on orders over $50 in the Continental US. Very exciting news! It is a well-known fact that many people avoid online shopping if possible, due to shipping charges, so this is a great perk. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t spend at least $50 on a Sephora trip? Sephora.com is also kind enough to offer you a selection of great samples with your shipment, as well as online-only weekly specials, where you can snag some awesome deals, like this week’s $15 Sephora Mini Make Up Palette, a $50 value  (click here to view).

Lastly, Sephora has one of the best customer service policies I’ve ever experienced. If you are at all dissatisfied with a product you’ve bought online, they happily accept it for a full refund either online or in-store…even if it’s been used. Brilliant! So next time you want to go on a girly shopping spree, but are too lazy to get yourself out to Sephora, go online and enjoy all the bonuses of Sephora.com (click here to visit the website).

Tips for the Perfect NYC Salon Mani-Pedi

3 May

The average NYC woman has a pretty back-to-back schedule. Between work, gym sessions, social engagements…who has time to squeeze much else in? Definitely understandable, but you should never underestimate the importance of the mani-pedi! And with super competitive nail salon rates (some offering both services for just $20!!), it’s absolutely necessary to find the time, at least once every two weeks or so (although I make it a weekly occurrence). So if you’re going to make time (as I hope you do), you should always leave the salon feeling 100% satisfied with your newly polished finger and toe nails. But unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Chipped polish? Uneven filing? The dreaded smudge? We’ve all been there. So since I fancy myself to be somewhat of a mani-pedi/nail polish connoisseur, I’ve come up with a list of tried and tested tips and tricks to ensure you come out of that salon with a smile on your face, ready to show off those hands and feet to the world!

Buy your own nail tools. Try and find a salon that you can frequent for most (if not all) of your mani-pedi visits, preferably one that offers a facility to house your own nail tools. Lots of salons have this feature nowadays — they keep trays/boxes labelled with regular customers’ names, allowing each to have their individual set of instruments. They may charge you for this service, but it’s well worth it. You may be exposed to several different foot and/or nail fungi by using the same tools as other patrons (you really shouldn’t trust anyone’s sanitizing or hygiene practices other than your own). Click here to read an article from Livestrong.com, detailing some of the risks associated with using improperly sanitized/shared nail instruments. Sephora carries a great “Deluxe Manicure Kit” for just $30 (click the image below to be forwarded to Sephora’s website to purchase). It includes almost everything you need: two nail clippers, a nail cleaner, precision scissors, a cuticle pusher, nipper and jaw, all in a very cute case. Buy a separate nail file and buffer and you’re all set! If you don’t feel like purchasing in-store or ordering online by clicking the picture below, inquire about buying a new set of tools at the salon itself.

Bring your own polish. I know this can get a little pricey, especially if you do the whole weekly mani-pedi thing, but it’s so worth it. Unfortunately, most salons water down their in-house polishes with acetone to make them last longer, which almost always leads to a lot of polish chipping. The nerve! However, when you bring your own colours, they’re far less likely to chip. In my case, manicures last an entire week, chip-free. Essie and OPI are the best polishes to buy — they last long and have a vast selection of colours. Another perk to bringing your own polish? If it does chip, you can always do minor touch-ups at home! But if you do decide to stray from these staple brands, make sure you choose companies whose formulas are DBP, Toluene and Formaldehyde free. If you’d like to read more about these toxic chemicals found in several nail companies’ products, click here to read an article from the Campain for Safe Cosmetics. Also, click here to be forwarded to the Essie website, and click here to visit OPI’s website (both brands are free of the toxic ingredients mentioned above).

Invest in a good base and top coat. This is essential if you want the polish to last. Essie makes two great base and top coat products (yes, I’m a huge Essie fan). “All In One Base” ($9.50) ensures the colour coats stick to your nail, while “Good to Go” ($8) adds a lovely shine to the colour, and more importantly, cuts drying time in half! Click the image, below, to purchase from Essie’s website.

Essie Nail Care – All In One Base

Don’t use the foot razor! I know it’s tempting, especially when your esthetician takes a look at your heels and looks up at you with a disgusted face, but think about what you’re doing. You’re allowing a complete stranger to take a blade to your feet and start hacking away! Yikes! And did you know that the use of foot razors is illegal in NYC nail salons? So beware — if the salon doesn’t follow this health/safety measure, what else might they fail to observe?

Try not to cut your cuticles too much. Yes, it’s true your nails will look much cleaner with much less cuticle. But if you cut too much too often, your cuticles will start growing back much faster than I’m sure you’d like. Have the manicurist push back as much of it as possible, before resorting to clipping (if necessary).

Make sure the polish dries entirely, but not under the UV light. Even though it’s time-consuming, don’t ruin a new mani-pedi because you didn’t want to wait an extra five minutes. Do the “dry test” when you think you’re ready to go — cautiously tap your pinky nails together, and if you feel them slightly sticking together, then they’re not ready yet. Back under the drier you go! But make sure you turn off the UV light. Yes it helps your polish harden, but it’s the same UV light that causes melanoma. Just because they are being used in a professional setting, doesn’t change the fact that they are ultra-violet rays.

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, watch what they’re doing! If you feel your nails were filed unevenly, cleaned improperly or polished inconsistently, tell them! You are paying for a service that you could do yourself, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t voice any dissatisfaction, within reason. Also, be sure to notice how spick-and-span the facility is in general. No need to do a full-blown CSI-style investigation (unless you feel inclined to do so), but do check for little things, like overall cleanliness, whether they do pedicure tub scrub downs between customers, and is that little sanitizing box where they keep the “communal tools” even on?

Hopefully, these little pointers will help you receive your ideal NYC salon mani-pedi…and with the warm weather fast approaching, there’s no reason we should hesitate to wear those super cute sandals ASAP.
